Applaud

Applaud is a social music-practicing app designed for beginning and intermediate students. It allows students to track their own progress as well as their friends' and to listen to and create recordings of pieces.

This app was designed as a student project.

Paper Prototypes

The first paper prototypes established a basic framework for the app, including the ability to:

  • gauge personal practice time and progress for each instrument and song to share with friends
  • use a built-in metronome
  • make recordings of songs in-progress
  • make final recordings of finished pieces
  • find and add friends
  • track friends' progress
  • listen to friends' in-progress recordings
  • listen to final recordings
  • receive points for progress and for final recordings
  • give and receive "applause"

Wireframes

After several rounds of user testing with the paper prototypes, I created the wireframes. The primary changes at this stage were to the personal practice page.

Final Design

Further user testing with the wireframes led to the final design. Additional clarifications were made to the personal practice page as well as to the friends progress page, profile pictures were added, and social feedback was simplified from "Standing Ovation" and "Applause" to only "Applause."

For branding, I chose cheery/bright colors, rounded icons, clean sans-serif and coordinating serif typography, and a professional but simple written voice (appropriate for younger users).
